PROGRAM SERVICES

Participants in the Student Support Services Program are more than twice as likely to complete college than  those students of similar backgrounds who do not participate in such programs like Student Support Services.  Participants must be willing to fully participate in the required designed program activities and services to successfully benefit from the program.  The following are program services:

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

The retention specialist and student plan realistic class schedules based on academic and major requirements. Students discuss the various possibilities that are most suitable for academic success within their own needs and capabilities.

CAREER PLANNING

Career advisement is provided to students on career education with information on the kinds of academic preparation required, course orientations, and demands in the job-market for a particular field.

In conjunction with this service, resumes are developed, interview techniques are mastered, and long-range planning is highly encouraged. These activities are designed to enhance the students’ abilities to make contributions to society and continue to grow as professionals in their chosen careers.

FINANCIAL AID ASSISTANCE

This service includes information on the kinds of financial aid available and assistance is provided in completing the yearly FAFSA.

Student Support Services Program retention specialists keep abreast of any changes that have occurred in the Financial Aid application process. For example, deadlines on completing applications may change from year-to-year. Students are made aware of the changes and advised to respond accordingly.

COMPUTER LABORATORY

Student Support Services Program maintains a fully equipped computer lab, with online services available for current Student Support Services participants.  The  Computer Lab is fully operational with the latest software, including Microsoft, Word,  Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Front Page.  The lab is networked with the university's math lab for tutorial assistance.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

The aim is to enhance the students’ social experience and cultural awareness. Students are exposed to selected activities designed to promote intellectual development outside a classroom setting. Students participating in the program are expected to attend all activities along with the Student Support Services Program staff members.
